w00t, a morning walk

I wonder what the opposite of saying "poor puppy" is?

This morning, we went on a morning walk around the small block. There were two very young children at the bus stop who were very excited to see Kane, so he went over to let them pat him. Kane is so placid that he even lays down, which according to the Dog Whisperer is surrendering as a calm submissive canine. I just think he likes to rest.

Poor puppy, I have to leave him soon to go to Melbourne. He should be alright.

power walk

Poor puppy, we haven't managed a morning walk for ages. We also must try to time our evening walks to coincide with the puppy parties at the ovals.

We went on a late night walk again, which is not a bad thing as it is much cooler. Tonight we crossed the road and walked a small block, but it is bigger than our usual small block. I walked fast this time, so we were able to cover a regular 20 minute walk in 17 minutes. Kane insisted on stopping and sniffing, but this time I kept walking so he had to run to catch up. After a few times, he figured that it was better to keep walking with me than stopping.

Short power walks now and again is an interesting change to longer meandering walks where Kane tires towards the end.

I'm off to Melbourne tomorrow, returning on Sunday. Emily will be staying with Kane. She loves Kane and can spend time with him before she gets travels to Jakarta in a few weeks for a two-year work diplomatic posting.

cool night

Today was another warm day, but not hot like it was a few weeks ago.

Emily came around this evening and, after I pointed to Kane that someone was at the door (he was in the kitchen with me), he barked a nice deep bark as she came in. After Emily left, after having dinner of roast pork belly, couscous and pumpkin, Kane and I went on a night work.

We walked the reverse of the small block and continued on, so it was about twice the distance. Being a cooler night (17.1 degrees Celsius or 63 degrees F), Kane was able to walk at a decent pace and we did the walk in 15 minutes. On warmer days, Kane sometimes manages half the distance in the same time.

We can't wait for autumn and cooler weather.

finally...

Poor puppy, we don't seem to be able to reclaim the morning walks.

It was warm today, so we didn't proceed on our walk after I returned home from work. After a short rest, we walked to Cook oval, saying hello to an old Kelpie called Max on the way. There was a puppy party at the oval. Most were leaving as we arrived, but Digger a very small Jack Russell x Fox Terrier was there. Like all Jack Russells, he was fascinated with Kane. We didn't stay long and continued our walk around the oval and then home. It was a decent walk.

Before our walk, Kane had a big barking session at the many passersby. He was doubly excited when Sherlock walked past again.

Monday meh

Poor puppy, I had hoped to wake up earlier so we could go on an early morning walk. Instead, I was running late.

We did go on a late night walk and it was only around the small block.

double do and a bath

Poor puppy, I meant to take him on a longer walk today, but had lots of household chores (making up for a month not cleaning due to hot weather). We did go on a late morning walk when it was still overcast, but only around the small block.

Around midday, I left Kane inside looking through the screen door, while I went out to lunch at the Dumpling Inn. Afterwards, Devi, Liz, Hannah and Lucy came over. Hannah and Lucy liked Kane but they want to get a King Charles Springer Spaniel. Lucy is about four years old.

Later on, I continued with more chores and then gave Kane a bath. It was still a warm day and Kane's damp fur did not take long to completely dry.

As I had more chores, we ended up going on a night walk around the small block, instead of a longer evening walk. Poor puppy. Kane did have a lengthy barking session through the screen door. It might have been a hint.

Kane had diced lamp chops for dinner with carrots and zucchini. Even though he ate all his medication, Kane left some vegetables. I worked out how to get him to finish eating them, by adding dried liver sprinkles on them. What a dirty trick!

almost

Poor puppy, I slept in today and didn't get up until nearly 9am. Kane was so patient.

We went on a late morning walk to the shops as it was still cooler. We walked via the woods at a leisurely pace. After my shop, we started to walk around the outside of the complex but Kane was walking very stiffly, so we turned around and then walked the short way home. Even though the temperature was only 21 degrees Celsius, it was warm in the sun.

We didn't go on a walk this evening. Kane did enjoy watching the passersby through the front screen door. There was a particular passerby to whom Kane barked vigorously. I looked and it was Sherlock (a Beagle), so I let Kane out to say hello. Kane likes Beagles.

double do

We had a good day today. This morning I was up earlier so we managed a morning walk before I went to work. It was around the small block.

I meant to take Kane on a longer walk after I returned home from work, but it was still warm and I fell asleep on the couch. We did go on a later night walk even though it was around the small block again.

dull day

Just like last Thursday, it's happened again. No walk today. I'm too tired. Poor puppy.

mid-week meh

Poor puppy, we are yet to do another early morning walk.

Kane had a nice barking session after I returned home from work. There were lots of passersby that he could see from the front screen door. In fact, Kane can see from a great distance and I have to look closer to check out what he has spied.

This evening, Emily and Jing came around and Kane barked at them on arrival. They stayed for a duck noodle dinner. After they left, Kane and I walked around the small block.

better bed

Poor puppy. We have yet to go back to taking early morning walks.

After yesterday's major outing, we took it easy tonight and went on the small block walk.

I've also upgraded Kane's night time sleep bed to something thicker. He prefers to lay on the floor, but I'm trying to cushion his joints a bit better. Hopefully, he will stay on it, as it is in his night sleep spot outside my room, where he prefers.

this bed is huge

Kane also likes the door way

a huge reunion puppy party

We did not manage to go on an early morning walk again. Nevermind.

I did return home a little earlier and instead of settling down to relax first, we went on our walk straight away. Not only that, we walked to Macquarie oval instead. We were the second lot of visitors, with Pepper and Jeanie already there. Then Rosie (a Kelpie) arrived. Before long, the oval was a hive of canine partying activity.

Kane had an awesome time. Usually at Cook oval, there aren't many pups and he is content just to lay down. Today at Macquarie, there were too many puppies to greet so Kane wandered everywhere, even running after Milko.

Colleen was back from being away for a long time. She had moved to Queensland, along with Ripley and Vinne. She commented on how well Kane looked. The last time we saw Colleen was a long time ago and she commented on his dry and dull fur. Thanks to fish and flaxseed oil tablets, Kane's fur is now thick and a rich black and dark chestnut colour.

We left after about an hour. With a bit of running, it was plenty of exercise, though Kane was a little tired and stiff on the way home. We might need to rest tomorrow.

Sunday

Poor puppy, we didn't do much today even though it was a cool day. There was some light drizzle.

This evening we walked to Cook oval and said hello to Tai and Molly, then walked back via another block. It was a good 40 minute outing.

finally, the Saturday big shop walk

We finally had a normal Saturday. We had a big walk in the early afternoon. We walked to the shops via the woods, then to the shops.

Before we arrived at the shops, we stopped at an apartment complex before we crossed the road, for Kane to take a drink at a perfectly placed tap. We always stop there, but I finally managed to take photos.

After my grocery shop, we walked around the outside of the complex and then dropped in to visit Millhouse (and Gretel, a poodle) before returning home via the alleys.

It was a decent length walk though Kane tired towards the end. Kane's unsteadiness on his legs thankfully was only an aberration yesterday.

from hot to cold

A week ago, it really hot (39.5 degrees C exactly). Today it was cold (17.2 degrees C).

We didn't go on a morning walk again. I must try and get out of bed earlier in the mornings. Anyway, I left Kane on the deck when I went to work, with another bone. With the heat, I hadn't been giving Kane bones out on the deck, so he's been enjoying having them.

This evening, I had a scare. Kane was very unsteady on his feet and kept on sliding down on the floor when he had his dinner. Later when he went outside he must have fallen or slipped on the steps from the deck and had his leg stuck. I had to carry Kane forward and then lift his leg out. Thankfully Kane was calm. If he had struggled, he would have broken his leg. Poor puppy, I was nearly in tears.

Thankfully Kane walked okay, so we went on an evening walk. It was also to stretch his legs. We walked to Cook oval, calling in to visit our next door neighbour (Glen and Janey) who were in their yard along the way. It was also quite chilly (13.8 degrees C) so we were able to walk at a brisk pace. We walked the abridged distance and then some, returning home in 25 minutes.

Poor puppy, we missed out on a lot of walks because of the hot weather so we will have to rebuild the strength in his legs.

dull day

Poor puppy. We didn't walk today.

I was running late in the morning for work.

This evening, I'm too tired. Emily came around and Kane barked when she arrived at the door. Later on Jing came over briefly, mainly to collect Emily.

returning to our old stomping grounds

We didn't go on a morning walk today as I needed to get into work earlier. Poor puppy, he was happy with his dried pig ear on the deck, where I left him.

This evening we walked to Macquarie oval the way that we used to go. We went past Tipper and Jack's house to say hello. They had just returned from the oval. We then continued on and arrived at the oval but nobody was there, so we walked around the block instead of cutting through the usual road.

Kane enjoyed returning to old routes and still remembers his way.

When we leave and enter the front door, Kane always waits for me. I always wondered why he would stand at the top of the front steps and wouldn't move until I had stepped off first. Similarly, on return home, he would go inside the house until I had done so first.

From watching Cesar Millan on Dog Whisperer, I can only surmise that Kane considers me to be his pack leader. Woohoo, I'm top dog in the house!

small block and then some

I was running late this morning so we didn't get to go on a morning walk around the block.

Tonight we went on our walk an hour after dinner time. It was around the small block and then some. We walked in reverse and then kept going to the next block and around. It was double the small block in double the time. While Kane likes routine, sometimes being unpredictable makes it more interesting.

w00t - two walks

Things are almost back to normal.

We went on the small block walk this morning before I went to work. Kane spent the door at his cool spot on brick paving. Today was a much cooler day.

This evening we walked to Cook oval. There was a puppy party on, with two Golden Retrievers and a blond Labrador (Kel) but it was too focussed on a ball, so we continued walking around the oval and then home via another extra little bit. It was a good 30 minute outing.

end of the hotness

Poor puppy, I wasn't up early enough for an early morning walk and it warmed up quickly.

It was a hot day again (39.5 degrees Celsius, 103 degrees F) and we stayed indoors to keep cool. Still too warm but not as hot outside.

Tonight we went on a small block walk. It had cooled down to 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees F). Unfortunately, the inside of the house is still warm (32 degrees Celsius, 90 degrees F) but Kane has decided to lay on the deck outside. Good dog.

Hopefully the heatwave conditions are over. It has been very uncomfortable for Kane with all his lovely thick fur.

Saturday, February 7, 2009

hot hot hot

This morning, Kane and I managed to go on a dawn walk just before sunrise. We left at 6.28am and walked to Cook oval via a loop, and home just as the sun broke over the horizon. It was a good 25 minute outing at the coolest time of the day (20.8 degrees Celsius - 69 degrees F).

Afterwards, I left Kane indoors while I walked to the shops. As I returned (before 9.30am, after being out for 45 minutes), I saw Nell and her person on their walk across the road so I invited them in to visit Kane. Nell was very happy to see Kane. We hadn't seen them for months.

They didn't stay too long, needing to finish their walk before it got too warm.

The rest of the day was indoors and a very hot day reaching 38.8 degrees Celsius (102 degrees F) at 6pm. The inside of the house always seems to stay about 5 degrees cooler.

Other than being a hot day, today was fine - we had a decent morning walk, a visitor, and an evening bark-fest through the screen door at passersby.

It's still quite warm tonight, so we aren't going anywhere.

Friday, February 6, 2009

duller Friday

Just like yesterday, we didn't go on a walk this morning as it warmed up too early.

It was also another hot day today and Kane spent the day indoors.

I was home a little earlier, but it also coincided with the hottest part of the day, reaching 39.5 degrees Celsius (103 degrees Fahrenheit) just after 5pm. The inside of the house was 34 degrees Celsius (93.2 degrees Fahrenheit), only marginally cooler.

I hosed Kane down with cold water and put the fan on him. Poor puppy.

We also aren't able to go on a walk tonight as it is still far too warm.

Poor puppy. The weekend is going to be hot and horrible.

Thursday, February 5, 2009

dull Thursday

We didn't go on a walk this morning as it warmed up too early.

It was also a hot day today and Kane spent the day indoors.

We didn't go on a walk this evening either as the temperature hasn't dropped much. 28.4 degrees Celsius at 10pm (83 degrees Fahrenheit) is still too warm. We prefer 25 degrees Celsius or less.

Poor puppy. It wasn't this hot last summer.

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

finally, the big block walk

We were up very early this morning and managed to go on the big block walk from 6.45am to 7.20am. Considering the slower pace as Kane insisted on stopping to smell frequently, we made good time.

Today was also a slight cooler, though warm day, so Kane spent the day outside on the deck, and his cool spot outside of the bathroom.

I was also home earlier today - at 4.30pm. It was very early as I had the afternoon off work to do my taxation stuff with an accountant, and then went home.

Kane was very alert, barking at passersby through the front screen door. His high pitched yips are turning into deeper barks. I wonder if I can get him to growl.

We didn't go on a walk tonight as Emily came over with Jing and we went out to dinner. Then we returned home. Kane liked Jing, who used to be a handler at Customs and worked with a German Shepherd called Ted who had a very good nose for detecting narcotics. I wonder if I can train Kane. Nah.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

finally, a decent walk

We missed the early morning window for a walk, but it was going to be a cooler day, still warm, but not so hot.

Kane was finally able to spend the day outdoors on the deck when I went to work. With a bone. Kane hasn't had a bone for awhile, it being too hot to stay outdoors, so he was very much into it.

This evening, it was also cooler so we went on a more decent walk - walking to Cook oval via a loop. At the oval we saw Rosie the three legged dog and two others, but continued around the oval and then home. The walk took 30 minutes.

In the meantime, Kane is still expressing himself, barking at passersby that he can see through the screen door.

Monday, February 2, 2009

a chip off the old block

We managed to catch the early morning window for a walk from 7.00am to 7.17am. This time, we crossed the road and walked a part of the big block - so it was a chip off the big block. The length was similar to the small block walk, possibly marginally longer.

Today was another warm to hot day, so Kane spent the day indoors when I went to work.

We didn't go on a night time walk even though it is a little bit cooler. Maybe tomorrow we will do two walks.

Sunday, February 1, 2009

another mini walk

Today was another warm day, but not as hot as the past week.

We missed the early morning window again for a walk, but managed to go late tonight, when there was a nice cool breeze.

We only walked around the small block. Kane did drag his claws to begin with, but as after stretching his joints, he walked a good quick pace from halfway.

Due to the hot weather, the minimum walk has now become pretty much a maximum walk.
