fish day

As we were out of fresh beef bones this morning, Kane was content to continue gnawing on an aged one on the deck when I left him on the deck before leaving for work.

When I returned home from work, Kane was still fast asleep on the deck. I was also a little late, going to the market on the way home. Fresh beef bone, quartered - check. Six fresh chicken wings - check, however the regular chicken store was shut as Brian's cat died. He usually discounts heavily for me.

Anyway, we went on our walk around the small block, with Kane taking his time to stop and sniff. He probably considers the outing more of a patrol of his territory than exercise.

Tonight, Kane had pan-fried fresh sardines (200g) for dinner, together with cooked diced carrot (150g) and zuchini (100g). Then a cup of kibble. Kane likes his vegetables. He really likes fish and I should cook fish for him more often.

Poppy then Jet

When I returned home from work, I spied over the gate to see Kane lying on his deck in wait. Good puppy.

We went on the usual small block walk. Glen was doing some weeding out the front of his yard next door, so we wandered over to say hello, then around to the back to greet Poppy the puppy. She was a little too excited with her jumping up at Kane so we didn't stay long.

Then we walked past Therese and Dee's house and they had just arrived home, so we stopped over to say hello before greeting Jet through their gate.

Jet

After such a great neighbourhood catch up, we continued around the block.

Even though the ovals are now too far to visit and the puppy parties much too boisterous, thankfully we have canine friends nearby.

Bumping into old friends

Today was a cool but pleasant day and perfect for Kane to spend on the deck checking out the world through the gate.

I was home a little earlier as Pauly Worley drove past as I was walking home and gave me a ride for the rest of the way. When I arrived home, I checked for Kane through the gate and up on the deck and he was alert and looking out. Sometimes he is asleep.

Anyway, we went on our walk around the small block. On the way home we bumped into Sherlock the Beagle who was on his way to Cook oval (too far now for Kane to walk). While Sherlock was happy to see Kane, he was more concerned about continuing his walk. Klaudia also walked past on her exercise walk.

Anyway, we were home and after Klaudia finished her walk, she dropped over for a cup of coffee. It has been a long time between visits.

Sunday

Today was another mostly cold and wet day. I meant to take Kane on an early morning walk to make up for yesterday's rest day, but it was raining on and off.

In the end, despite a light drizzle, we went on a walk around the small block with Kane wearing his raincoat.

Saturday, September 26, 2009

wet day

Today has been a miserably wet day. The rain would start and stop so we didn't go on a walk, to avoid being caught in a downpour.

Poor puppy. Today was a cold day. Kane is starting to moult so will need a thorough fur brushing soon. He enjoys it too.

Friday variation

This morning as I was locking the back door, Kane recognised the drill and wandered off the deck to the back and behind the gate. When I left for work, I made sure that to wave to Kane from the front of the gate.

I returned home from work a little bit later and with a surprise for Kane - two visitors. It was Paul and Lumi who walked back with me. We then went for a walk around the small block in the opposite direction and P&L then continued home while Kane and I rounded the corner. On the way home, we stopped by to visit Therese and Dee's new front deck. This time, Kane was able to climb all the steps. Jet (the German Shepherd) looked up from behind his gate but we didn't go and greet him.

Thursday

(This morning's bone)

I returned home a little later than usual, not only an extra 15 minutes at work, but also stopping past Therese's place two doors down to check out her house extension. Poor puppy.

We went on our walk around the small block. Poor puppy, the distance is the most he can walk these days, and some days only just.

Wednesday

The rain continued overnight (including hailstones) and this morning. The dust was finally cleared from the air but moved to Sydney and Brisbane. It was also colder today.

Kane was content on the deck and saw me leave for work through his vantage point looking over the gate. When I returned home, he was still looking out, but with a bone in his mouth. Presumably, he had a nap sometime during the day.

We walked around the small block, which is our default walk. Kane walked well up to the alley and I was tempted to continue to Cook oval, but his walk was still laborious so we continued home.

Tuesday dustday

This morning, by the time I had locked the front door and on my way out, Kane had wandered around the back to see me depart. So I waved. Poor puppy.

This afternoon, when I returned home from work, Kane was asleep on the deck. I had walked from work with Pauly Worley on his way home too, so woke up Kane through the gate and deck.

We walked around the small block. It was just as well, as not long after, a big thunderstorm started, with heavy rainfall. There has been a dry dust storm all day so it will clear and clean the air.

Kane wants a tiger cub

Back to a working week. When I left for work, Kane had gone down into the yard to do his poo. I wonder if he went around to the side gate afterwards to look for me leaving. Anyway, when I returned home from work, he was on the deck looking out. Good dog.

We went on our usual small block walk. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes, but it is usually 20 minutes, like tonight.

Meanwhile, a tiger cub was born at Mogo Zoo, but due to a hip problem, is being human hand-reared. The cub, called Kinwah, is quite attached to the German Shepherd Rumble. See Daily Telegraph (Sydney).

(more photos from Daily Telegraph)

Kane would probably get along well with a Tiger cub, but no, he cannot have one.

Sunday

Today was a lazy day at home, mostly indoors.

We went on our walk around the small block in the late afternoon. Spring is well and truly in the air. Unfortunately, the days of walking up mountains are way past.

Saturday

Poor puppy, we didn't go anywhere all morning and then the weather warmed up. I left him looking out through the screen door when I walked to the shops in the mid-afternoon. He had barked at a few passers-by beforehand.

When I returned home from the shops I started making a batch of Kane's dinners so we didn't go on our walk until the late afternoon. It was only around the small block. Aside from checking out the scents (canine gossip) along our walks and watching people and dogs walking pass the front (from the deck over the side gate, or through the screen door), Kane isn't getting much other mental stimulation. We may need to visit some of our neighbourhood canine friends soon.

Friday

When I returned home from work today, Kane was asleep on the deck. By the time I was in the house and unlocking the back door, he was laying up (on his front with head up, compared to laying down, which is on his side). Good puppy.

We went on our walk around the small block. After yesterday's rain, which would have washed out a lot of the scents (gossip), Kane took his time stopping and sniffing.

Thursday

I returned home from work a little earlier than usual to beat the imminent rain. When I reached home, Kane was waiting behind the gate looking out for my return.

Due to the weather we didn't go on a walk, to avoid being drenched half-way. In any case, it did start raining anyway. Poor puppy.

something different

When I returned home from work, Kane was waiting behind the gate. This time, I unlocked the padlock on the other side through a hole in the gate, being sure not to drop the keys. Then I opened the gate and let Kane through. What a surprise. Then Kane came into the house with me from the front.

We walked around the small block, but on the way we first visited Poppy the Kelpie puppy next door. She was very excited so we didn't stay long.

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Tuesday

When I returned home from work, Kane was waiting behind the gate. He must miss me when I'm not home.

We went on our usual walk around the small block. I don't know if Kane will ever be able to walk the distances we used to cover.

Monday, September 14, 2009

a new neighbour pup

Today was a near warm day. Kane was busy with his bone when I left for work.

When I returned home, I did not see Kane behind the gate or on the deck. When I opened the back door, I finally saw him in the yard. Good dog.

We went on our walk around the small block as usual. When we returned to our house, we saw Kerry from across the road out their front so we walked over to ask about his new puppy. We saw Bernie through their gate and he wanted to climb their fence. Bernie looked like a brown dog of unknown mix breed. He was also not well socialised, growling at Kane, probably from fear.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Sunday

Today was a warmer day compared to the cool ones we've had lately, so we didn't go on a walk in the morning or early afternoon. Kane did bark from the deck, loudly and deeply. It was a nice bark. Good dog.

In the late afternoon, we went on our walk around the small block. We came across another canine on his walk with a lady. She was very rude and asked me to put Kane on a leash, which I did. However, it was her aggressive dog that was the problem, not Kane who could not walk fast anyway. Stupid woman.

Saturday slow day

Today has been a really pleasant and mild day. Poor puppy, we didn't go on our walk until the early afternoon. It was around the small block and Kane took his time, stopping often to smell the gossip.

Later in the afternoon, Devi came to visit and Kane barked when she came to the door. It was a very croaky bark. Poor puppy, perhaps he needs to practice, just like singing.

I hadn't gone to the shops yet, so Devi and I went as she also needed supplies. Devi also made me watch a rugby union match. She also stayed for some pea and ham soup for dinner but didn't stay for all of the subsequent AFL (Australian Rules football) game.

Friday

After yesterday's market shop, Kane had a fresh bone this morning. Also really good today was that when I returned home from work, Kane was asleep on the deck. I prefer him to be relaxed than waiting anxiously for my return.

Anyway, we walked around the small block. Kane also walked much better today. I wonder if the improvement is seasonal-related. He has never been affected by the cold weather before, struggling more in hot weather.

Thursday, September 10, 2009

Thursday

As I didn't go to work yesterday, I didn't go to the markets on the way home so there was no fresh bone this morning, but Kane was content with an old bone.

This afternoon, I returned home with CQ who was happy to come on the daily walk, which was around the small block. Kane seemed to enjoy walking with a bigger pack and the walk only took 14 minutes.

Afterwards, CQ and I had bangers, mash and peas for dinner and watched a horror film, Let the Right One In. Then CQ went home.

mid-week special

Lucky puppy. I wasn't feeling well today, so spent the whole day at home with Kane. He was very content though slept most of the day anyway, as did I.

We went on our regular walk at the usual time, around the small block. Kane walked much better today.

Melba visits again

This morning as I left for work, Kane went out to the gate to see me off. I waved to him from the outside.

When I returned home from work, he was still there, or back there. Poor puppy, I hope he was not there all day as it rained heavily for parts of the day. Anyway, his fur was damp and not soaking wet, so hopefully he had only just walked down to see me return. Poor puppy, he must miss me when I'm not there.

Anyway, we went on our walk around the small block. Kane needs to go on his walks regularly though with occasional rests. Unfortunately therein lies the dilemma - his joints do get sore from walking, but if he doesn't stretch and exercise his joints become stiff.

This evening Melba the Border Collie came over to visit with Adam. Kane was pleased to see her. Then while Adam and I talked about the football game on the weekend over beers, Melba decided to partake in Kane's bones on the deck. Kane didn't mind sharing. Then they left.

Monday rest

It rained most of today.

When I reached home, walking from work, it poured down and then stayed raining for sometime, so there was no walk before dinner.

We will definitely have to go on a walk tomorrow.

Sunday, September 6, 2009

Sunday

Today was another fine and pleasant sunny day, but we had a rest day instead.

This afternoon, Kane had a short barking session with Scotch the Dobermann next door.

As much as Kane enjoys his walks, he does so with difficulty most of the time so should be resting more often.

Saturday, September 5, 2009

Saturday

Today was a fine and pleasant sunny day. We went on our walk in the middle of the afternoon, around the small block before I walked to the shops alone. Poor puppy, it's too far for him to walk these days. I bumped into Margie at the shops and she gave me a ride home while I gave her an update of Kane's progress and she informed me of Lola's trip to the vet due to possible poisoning.

We were expecting visitors this evening, but it didn't eventuate.

Friday

After leaving Kane for so long yesterday, during the day and evening, I was nearly tempted to stay home today. Alas, I had to go to work.

After Kane's breakfast of a chicken wing, I let him out to do his pee. This time, he had no problem climbing the back deck steps.

When I returned home from work, Kane was fast asleep on the deck. Anyway, he was happy to see me and then we went on our walk around the small block.

After dinner, Kane is content to have me in sight and to lay around.

Thursday - early and late

Poor puppy. Thursday was a strange day.

I returned home from work earlier than usual, by an hour. On arriving home, I spotted Kane just walking to the gate to wait for me. After I went inside, Kane had laid down in wait behind the gate. I had to tell him I was already home. Silly puppy. We went on our walk straight away around the small block and after an hour's rest he had an early dinner.

Just after 6.40pm, we had a visitor (Anne) and Kane barked as he went to the door to greet her. Unfortunately, I left with Anne to go to a work trivia night, leaving Kane indoors.

I didn't return home until 12.20am (our team won the competition). When I opened the door, poor puppy was still laying beside the door in alertness. He must have been in the same position for hours waiting patiently, not daring to fall asleep.

I let Kane out to do his pee before sleep but he had trouble climbing the back deck steps and I had to help him. Laying in the same position must have left his joints stiff. It was far too long to leave Kane at his age.

Wednesday better

This morning when I left the house for work, I checked the side gate and Kane had wandered down from the deck to see me depart. Poor puppy. Thankfully, when I returned home, he was back on the deck and had not been laying behind the gate all day.

We went on our small block walk and Kane had moments when he walked a little faster. It's great improvement. The walk was also 17 minutes, so a little faster. Soon, we should hopefully be able to increase the walk to the double block.

Tuesday, September 1, 2009

Tuesday

When I returned home from work, Kane was laying behind the gate waiting for me.

We went on the small block walk, saying hello to our neighbour next door (their Dobermann called Scotch was indoors) as they just arrived home. We also saw Bruno the chocolate Labrador across the road, but he is far to exuberant for Kane, so us people just waved.

The new and improved deck steps have been in place for a week now and Kane is content to go to the yard and back unassisted, from the deck.
