a new friend!

This evening, I took Kane to visit the neighbours who live two doors up, moreso to meet the German Shepherd puppy Jet (seven months old). Kane was very happy. I had a bit of a chat with Theresa who has been living there for 12 years.

After the chat, Kane and I went to the playing fields and we met up with Nellie, the Cocker Spaniel. Nellie kept on giving her ball to Kane but he so did not want it! Just as we were leaving, Jake the Kelpie arrived. I think we were out for a good 80 minutes.

Today was another warm day. It stormed tonight, but I managed to take Kane for a walk around the block before it rained.

cool dog

It is a little bit cooler tonight, but I'm resting Kane instead of going on a walk so that he stays cool. Poor puppy, he doesn't like the heat. I left him inside today when I went to work as he likes lying on the bathroom tiles.

another German Shepherd

I took Kane on his walk after sundown tonight and he was a lot better, even leading ahead with a bit of a canter. We went to the playing fields and Nell the Cocker Spaniel was there, so he was quite happy.

We also discovered another German Shepherd who lives two doors up. Kane spotted him looking out of her window (our neighbour in between had already mentioned that his name is Jet). Unfortunately, he didn't come out to say hello.

more please

I took Kane on a walk to the shops before sundown. Poor puppy, he walked very slowly today. Jake the Kelpie from down the street came over to say hello during his walk though, which was quite exciting.

I gave Kane another brush today and too many treats (the small pieces of Divine Tempters I get him to catch with his mouth - it is so cool).

more treats please?

Kane Day

Today was Kane Day. I gave him aqua therapy and a massage this afternoon (okay, it was a wash, followed by moisturising of his skin and fur with lanolin cream). Afterwards, we went on a walk to the shops. I bumped into Anaree at the shops and we had a yarn while she shopped at the green grocer store.

Afterwards, I took Kane around the outside of the shopping centre, which he found olfactorily stimulating. We even discovered a fruiting apple tree. On the way home, Kane decided he wanted to go another way, along a bike path. Not that Kane stayed on the path as there were lots of grass and trees alongside, which was obviously another doggy trail. So it was a long detour home.

Kane is pooped out from all the excitement and exercise of today, but there is always room for extra treats.

Friday, January 25, 2008

I'm letting Kane rest tonight as I plan to take him on a longer walk tomorrow morning. His arthritis seemed to slow him down a bit last night. Poor puppy. I had lamb for dinner and gave him some.

where were they?

Poor Kane. We walked to the playing fields again tonight, although a little bit earlier - around 7.30pm with plenty of light before sunset. Kane eagerly trotted off to the playing field and looked so disappointed that none of his doggy friends were there. The weather isn't even too warm. Perhaps there is a canine strike on, and Kane did not receive the memo.

leftovers

After dinner, Emily and I went for a walk with Kane. It is getting darker earlier and at 8.30pm, none of Kane's doggy friends were out. On the way back, he went straight to Jake's house and said hello to Nick who was outside. Emily thought it was funny when I pointed out Kane's sniffing stations in advance, which included lamp poles and shrubs.

Kane was lucky tonight, he managed to have his regular food mixed with Emily's leftover steak (off the bone and cut into pieces), along with the carrot, broccoli and beans.

a cat!

This evening's walk, I let Kane lead the way. Thankfully he turned right to go to the shops as I wanted to go there too. He knows his way very well. I'm beginning to work out all his sniffing stations. He is also much more comfortable with the cooler weather we are having as he walks ahead of me at quite a fast pace.

We saw a cat, who stood his ground and wouldn't move. Kane would have probably licked and slobbered all over him.

where's the party?

It was a cooler day today. I took Kane on an earlier evening walk. In fact, he led the whole way. Unfortunately, none of his doggie friends were around, even at the playing fields. We must have been too early.

a new route

Tonight's walk with Kane was to the local shops, then the long way round home. We came across a cute black poodle cross with his person, who wanted to play, but Kane was not interested.

wet dog

I took Kane on a walk with me to the shops in the early afternoon. He didn't mind the light drizzle, though it made him smell like a wet dog! Of course, most of the canine news on the ground had been diluted, so he took some time trying to smell it all.

Friday, January 18, 2008

It rained today, from the afternoon onwards - so no walk for Kane tonight. He seems fine with that.

black Labradors are funny

Emily and I took Kane for a walk to the playing fields. Jake was already there, but didn't stay long. Then new dogs Lily (an overweight black Labrador) and Poss (an undersized Blue Heeler) turned up. Lily was a funny dog and wanted to play by trying to get Kane to chase her. Nice try.

On the way... Kane does a pee - or rather leaving a message for his doggy pals

best friend Jake

Kane seems to prefer to stay inside when I go to work. Perhaps he senses when it will be a warm day.

Anyway, tonight's walk was a little bit later at dusk and we there was already a doggy party happening at the playing fields. Kane enjoyed meeting two new dogs, a small poodle and a tiny terrier. Jake, Vinnie, Ripley, Jack and Bronte were there, so it was a lot of fun. Kane enjoyed walking back with Jake.

cabbage?

I've discovered that Kane likes cooked cabbage! During this evening's walk, Kane met a new dog also on a walk, but a silly one. We went past Tessie's place (she's a Border Collie) but nobody was home, nor were the two mad dogs next door to her, nor was the Beagle in the house after. He did help to scare away two Galahs which were being stalked by a cat. I'm sure he wanted to say hello to the kitty, but I led him away. He would have been beaten up by the cat!

a new route

I had planned to walk Kane to the playing fields, but he turned left instead so I followed him with the lead, and he walked around another and new way at a brisk pace while having a sniff-fest. I wonder what he was thinking. It seemed he was following a smell trail.

Nell

I took Kane on a walk to the playing fields this evening when it was cooler. Nell, the Cocker Spaniel was the only other dog there.

at the shops

I took Kane on an earlier walk before it became too warm - to the local shops.

Friday, January 11, 2008

Today was a very warm day. I left Kane inside the house when I went to work - which would have been cooler than outside the house. He likes to lie on the bathroom tiles. He really feels the heat, so I didn't take him on a walk tonight.

Thursday, January 10, 2008

Emily and I walked with Kane to the playing fields. Unfortunately, nobody else was there. It's still a warm night, which may explain why there weren't other dogs running after balls.

new friends

I walked Kane a bit earlier tonight, at 7.30pm as it was much cooler. We went the long way round to the playing fields. Not only were Vinnie and Ripley there, but there were two new dogs to meet (Zulu, a Spoodle cross and Taz, a Cocker Spaniel). Zulu liked Kane.

As if that wasn't enough, another Cocker Spaniel called Nell turned up, then a Brown Labrador called Bruno. Bruno loved Kane. He kept on playing a silly game of seemingly allowing Kane to exert his dominance (trying to push him down into a submissive pose) but then pulling away. This went on for far too long so Bruno's people decided to take him home.

Four new doggy friends, and out for an hour. So much excitement for an old dog!

party

Today was a rather warm day. I waited until sunset before taking Kane on his walk. There was a bit of a doggy party happening at the playing fields - Jake (who we collected along the way), Vinnie and Ripley, Jade, and Bronte and Jack. Kane really enjoys canine company.

Sofie

As it was still a bit warm tonight, I only walked Kane around the block. We did call in to say hello to Sofie, a Great Dane along the way. Sofie loves meeting other dogs, just like Kane.

naughty Jake

I walked Kane to the shops this afternoon and he kept an old guy in a quadriplegic wheelchair company outside while I grocery shopped. The old man is always at the shops, and he was particularly happy when I passed him treats to give to Kane.

This evening I walked Kane past Jake's house. We were told that Jake is in big trouble as he escaped again today. His people took an hour and a half to find him. At the playing fields we met up with Vinnie and Ripley again, and a Staffordshire Terrier called Bolly turned up. Nice dog.

(this morning - this old dog still has excellent teeth)

that naughty Jake

Tonight's walk with Kane was quite exciting. On the way to the playing fields, we found Jake on the street (he somehow escaped from his yard), so he was invited along. Thankfully Colleen was already there with Ripley and Vinnie. Then Laura arrived with Jade (recently moved to our suburb), then Mark with Bronte and Jack. It was a bit of a party with seven canines!

I arranged with Colleen to drop Jake over after I walked Kane home, if there was nobody home at his place, and leave a note. Kane enjoyed having Jake over, though Jake wanted him to play with the ball that he found. After about an hour, Jake's person Nick came over to collect him. Quite an exciting night.

Momo

This evening, I took Kane for a walk over to Mary and Margaret's place, a 20 minute walk away. I'm not sure what he made of the puppy Momo who was terribly excited as Kane mostly ignored him. Kane seemed to like Mary though and she gave him lots of treats. On the walk home, Kane said hello to Jake (who was going on his walk a bit late as it was dark).
