happy Thursday

Unlike the past few Thursdays, we actually managed to go on a walk tonight. In fact, we went on the big block walk, which took 30 minutes.

The walk was also timely, as after we returned home it started raining. Not only that, we went on our walk before dinner time.

a late walk... again

Tonight we went on a late night walk again. As it was cold (5 degrees C), it was only around the block.

night walkers

Most of our walks are in the evening and it is dark.

Tonight we didn't go until later, after dinner. We only went around the block but Kane's torch collar is still cool.

We are almost equipped to fight crime in our fair city.

woof

I returned this afternoon and Kane was happy to see me. Even better, we went out on a walk right away.

I bought a very light-weight head-lamp in Melbourne and it was perfectly sized as a collar with a torch, which I put on Kane and we walked to Macquarie oval.

Nobody was there, although we spied Lil on her way home. We walked back and visited Jake on the way home. Luckily, Jake had not gone on a walk yet, so we walked together through a few alleys to the green way and then home again. We even saw Bruno out on his walk and said hello, or rather, he wanted to play with Kane.

We were out for about an hour, so it was a great walk.

a bonus day

I was actually supposed to be in Melbourne today, but now not going until tomorrow, so today was a bonus day with Kane as I did not go to work instead. That would have been silly.

Anyway, we went on a midday walk to the shops at Kane's pace so he spent more time stopping and sniffing than actually walking. After grocery shopping, we walked around the outside as usual and then took the long way home along the green way.

Kane was really naughty and walked quite a way ahead without waiting for me, so I played a trick on him and hid behind a tree. He finally stopped and looked for me. A young woman actually walked past me, saw Kane and asked if I "know the dog". She looked a bit nervous, so I told her yes, but I was only playing a trick on him. Some people are scared of Kane

I've decided to add cooked brown rice to Kane's regular mixture of cooked pork mince, cabbage and carrot, with cut green beans added to the mix once it's cooked. Apparently, wild dogs and wolves eat the contents of their prey's stomach first, which usually contain grains and vegetable matter.

Tonight, Kane had raw lamb chops for dinner. The pork and vegetables are for dinner tomorrow and Sunday.

While I am away (until Monday), Emily will stay over and care for Kane.

boring Thursday

Thursdays are ending up being a non-walking day/night.

It's turning into a bad habit.

finally, a puppy party

I left work earlier today and went to the markets on the way home, but managed to stock up on the bare fresh essentials for Kane in a hurry.

We went to Macquarie oval as soon as I returned home (I had spied a puppy party in session on the way home).

Anyway, we managed to catch the end of the puppy party - with Jake, Jack, Lil, Cos, Genie and Rosie. It wasn't a big puppy party, but there were enough of Kane's canine friends for him to have fun.

Kane loves going to the puppy parties.

We were out for nearly 30 minutes. Back on our street we also walked around the block, calling into Jet's house to say hello.

the nose knows

On my way home from work I met Bruno (the chocolate Labrador) who was returning home from his walk so I gave him lots of pats and a cuddle. Then I saw Viva (the blond Labrador) and fussed her as well.

When I returned home, Kane smelt them on my hands and my clothes.

Tonight we went on the big block walk. It was a lovely walk and Kane enjoyed catching up with the messages left by the neighbourhood pooches.

Here is an article about the Australian Customs dog breeding program. Kane would have made a wonderful Customs dog as he has a very acute sense of smell. He knows where there is food.

not-attack dog

Tonight we only walked around the block. I had intended the big block walk, but it was too cold to stay out for that long.

Anyway, I was telling Kane about German Shepherds working with the British Army in Afghanistan, but he couldn't understand why they would attack other people, or do work for that matter. Kane thinks all dogs should just want to make friends with other dogs and humans.

semi super Sunday

We went on an adventure today, which was terribly exciting.

Around midday we walked to Momo's house and Mary gave me a glass of wine. Momo was overly excited but eventually settled down. After about 30 minutes, we walked to the hardware store. I left Kane by the entrance next to a sausage sizzle, which may have been mean.

Kane outside the hardware store

After a quick shop for rangehood light globes we walked across the road to the Belconnen fresh food markets and straight to the pet store. It was a lot of fun and Kane had a smell of all the dry food packets. We even saw Splat.

what the slide above missed (Splat up on high)

After the pet store, I went to the book store to check out their new shipment. It's a discount store with most books being around half the usual retail price.

Kane outside the book store

On the way home, we saw Tess outside her house, so Kane and I went to say hello to her.

We walked across the oval on the way home and it started to rain. It was a very exciting outing for nearly two and a half hours and perfectly timed as it has been raining ever since.

Twosday

Poor puppy. We didn't have a Kane Day Super Saturday today. It was just an ordinary Saturday. This morning I meant to take Kane to visit Momo, but there was laundry to be done. Not only that, but I fell asleep on the couch around midday.

We finally made it out in the early afternoon for a walk to the shops After I had finished grocery shopping, we walked around the outside as usual. When we had gone right around there was another dog in Kane's spot. His name was Chocco and he was very friendly and wanted to play. Unfortunately, he was tied to the post. He also barked a few times and looked upset when we left.

Later in the afternoon, we walked to Cook shops (two different shops in one day) with plans to join any puppy party at Cook oval. Even after 4pm, nobody was there.

So we walked to Macquarie oval (two ovals in one day), stopping by Jack's house along the way, and were greeted by Viva. Then Nell showed up. Three strange Labradors (each of blond, chocolate and black) also arrived, but their person didn't join in.

It was a tiring afternoon for Kane. I will have to make sure that we walk every night, despite the cold, as he can lose fitness.

Tonight, I spent time in the kitchen making pig skin snacks (slow drying in the oven). Kane likes to stay in the kitchen to keep me company.

boring Friday

Poor puppy, I fell asleep on the couch after I returned home from work. We should have gone on a big block walk

When I woke up, it was Kane's dinner time.

In the end, we did go for a walk, but it was only around the block and after 11pm.

Thankfully, we have the weekend.

This picture could easily be Kane.

boring Thursday

Poor puppy, some nights we don't go on a walk at all for some reason or another. It was the same last Thursday, when it was raining.

Tonight, it is just nicer being warm indoors.

There is tomorrow.

déjà vu

This week is seemingly déjà vu. It appears that what we did tonight and last night are oddly familiar.

Tonight we went on a late night walk (after 10pm) but only around the block. Last night we went on the big block walk. Did this happen last week?

Anyway, Kane had Blue Warehou fish fillets for dinner, along with some mussels.

big block walk

Tonight we went on the big block walk. This time, I let Kane go off-leash but he kept his collar on as I clipped a tiny light-weight one LED mini-torch to it.

Off-leash, he was able to stop and sniff whatever he wanted along the way. Our walk still took 30 minutes, as I didn't stop and Kane had to 'jog' to catch up with me.

He looked funny with a light shining from his collar. It was a good idea as I could see him whenever he wandered off.

Tonight, Kane had diced raw beef heart for dinner.

no walk

Poor puppy, we didn't go on a walk tonight. I'll have to make it up tomorrow.

Sunday, July 13, 2008

woof woof

I returned this afternoon and Kane was quite happy to see me. As always, he wouldn't let me out of his sight.

I meant to take Kane to one of the ovals to a puppy party, but unfortunately, I fell asleep on the couch and it was dark when I woke.

We did go on an evening walk to the shops, which Kane enjoys.

Friday, July 11, 2008

hmmm...

Poor puppy, he will have to do without my company until Sunday afternoon as I will be in Melbourne.

It finally stopped raining today so we were able to go for a walk around the block (the minimal walk, which is more like a territorial patrol). On the way home we came across a Golden Retriever called Sunny. She was very submissive and laid on her back exposing her belly. Silly dog, the ground was wet too.

This evening, Kane will get a surprise when Emily lets him back inside instead of me. He loves Emily more anyway, as he gives her lots more nudges.

boring Thursday

Poor puppy, it's been raining and it's also very cold, so we didn't go on a walk tonight.

At least he had fresh pan fried fish for dinner. Blue Warehou fillets. The usual Gemfish fillets at the markets were nice and thick, but they were too big and the fishmonger wouldn't cut them.

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

a late walk

We usually go on our walk before dinner time, but tonight we went much later.

It was really cold so it was only around the block.

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

big block walk

Poor puppy, I think he was keen to stay in today, but I had to go to work.

I meant to take him for a quick walk around the block and then settle him indoors for the day, where it would be warmer. Instead, he opted for the bone outside on the deck. I hope his fur coat was warm enough for the really cold day we had.

Tonight we went on the big block walk, which took 30 minutes. It was at a brisk pace as it was very cold, although Kane insisted on stopping to sniff now and again.

Monday

We nearly didn't go on a walk tonight as it has been raining. The rain did ease up and we walked around the block. We even stopped at Jet's place two doors up as a car in their yard had its interior light still on, so we went and told them. Anyway, Kane hadn't seen Jet for ages so he was pleased to see Jet. Jet was very happy and wanted to play indoors.

another puppy party

Today was a very lazy day. I meant to walk Kane to the markets this morning, but decided to relax.

We went on an afternoon walk to Cook oval, firstly to the shops. We were early and nobody was there. As we departed, Millhouse (Labradoodle) arrived. I called out to Millhouse from a distance and he ran over. He is usually too focussed on a ball to pay any attention, but he was very attentive today. Millhouse is a lovely dog.

We were joined by Tosca (Staffordshire Terrier and Bassett Hound cross), also a very nice dog. Old Max, whom we met once was being walked to the Cook shops and enjoyed saying hello to everyone. Jake also arrived, as his person Sue was also walking to Cook shops.

Melba (Border Collie) was also being walked to the shops, but was on the outside. She was a good dog and ran over when I called her. We had a cuddle before her person called her back.

After being roughed up at yesterday's puppy party at Macquarie oval, today's party was very civilised. We walked back with Jake.

Super Kane Day Saturday

We haven't had a Kane Day for a little while. Today was not only a Kane Day, but also a Super Kane Day Saturday. We were out for most of the day on three outings.

This morning we walked to the vet to use their scales. Kane's weight was 42.0 kg, although the initial reading was 41.6 kg. I was expecting around 40.0 kg, which would be his ideal weight.

On the way out, we met Desker and Tuller, the Shelties. Desker was on his way in to be weighed as well. We also met another dog who was a Rhodesian Ridgeback cross, but had more Greyhound/Great Dane in him.

On the way back, we stopped by Mary and Margaret's place. Momo was excited to see Kane, who mostly ignored him. I had a coffee and Kane finished off Momo's breakfast of cooked chicken.

On our way home, we came across Dusty, the old brown Kelpie who lives across the street. Dusty was on his way to the vet to collect his medication.

It was a great morning outing of about two hours.

Early in the afternoon, we walked to the shops. After I had finished grocery shopping, we walked around the outside of the complex and then home via the greenway. The outing was about an hour and a half, although I left Kane for about 20 minutes outside the shops.

After a few hours rest, Jake came to the door to invite us on a walk to Macquarie oval. It was perfect timing as there was a big puppy party in session. Unfortunately, there was a black dog called Saxon who insisted on exerting his top dog status, which Kane didn't like. Saxon was also not desexed. Eventually, Saxon was put back on his lead.

It's been a pretty exciting and tiring day.

boring Friday

Poor puppy, I fell asleep on the couch after I returned home from work. I had intended to walk Kane to Cook shops which is a decent walk.

Instead, when I woke up, we only walked around the block. Still, Kane likes that walk as he usually leads the way and knows where he is going, and we don't really have to cross any busy roads.

Thankfully, we have the weekend.

Thursday, July 3, 2008

boring

We didn't go on a walk tonight as I had things to do when I returned home from work, such as preparing dinner and also making Kane's dinner of cooked pork and cabbage.

Poor puppy. I'll have to make it up to him tomorrow and on the weekend.

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

another big block walk

Seeing that today was Wednesday and we only went on minimal walks for the last two nights, we went on a big block walk tonight. This time, we didn't take a short cut but went to the end of our street street so it took about 35 minutes.

Kane had fresh baked fish for dinner tonight. So did I.

a double block, and then a half

The weather has been cold lately and though Kane doesn't mind as he has thick warm fur, I do unfortunately.

This evening we only walked around our block and the next one, so it was a double block.

We also had company as Martin who used to live in the house behind now lives around the corner of the block.

We had another walk when we walked Martin home. It was only a half block walk as we cut through his yard from the back and went out the front.

Kane was happy to go on an extra late night outing.
